“Light Crystals” Sculpture For Workshop Dome, Sulawesi Eclipse Festival

“Light Crystals” Light Sculpture, 2016

~40 x 45 cm

Bamboo/LEDs/Cellophane

“Light Crystals” are ten light sculptures, designed and assembled for Sulawesi Eclipse Festival, 2016 Indonesia.

These crystals have a bamboo structure inside which we hand cut, cleaned and crafted from raw dried         Indonesian bamboo. Bamboo is a very versatile material. It bends to every need; from needles to architectural beams.

The dome was conceptually made as a huge, tribal tipi. It holds a delicate bamboo structure as skeleton and coconut husks for the covering. We worked during the building of the dome by cutting and assembling the architecture. Towards the end we contributed to the design directly by designing and making the bamboo door.

For the architecture, we worked with 100 Ngatabaru people from the nearest two villages. With immense patience and virtue, they taught us how to work with bamboo and rattan. We learned how to make beams, nails, connectors and assemblies. Together, we made huge structures up to 8 meters, domes, tree houses and playing grounds.

SULAWESI ECLIPSE FESTIVAL, 2016

Sulawesi Eclipse Festival was one of those rare accounts where you could let your creativity flow. Furthermore, you could be free to do whatever project that contributed to the concept of the occasion. We worked in that atmosphere, at almost every stage and for 40 days. In other words, we were cut loose. It was the “Mad Max On The Moon”. Tribal stage architecture designed by the talented artist Punkadelik met the post apocalyptic tech installations from the notorious Japanese crew.
